G & O Titanium Springs

The surface integrity of titanium is critical to its performance as a spring, to support this all of the Titanium springs we produce are mandrel coiled. We also recommend that Beta Titanium springs have the alpha case removed post AMS-H-81200 compliant heat treatment by either etching to ASTM B600 or by other mechanical means such as vapour blasting. The ductility of Beta Titanium is significantly reduced without this process. We also recommend that Beta C is shot peened to AMS2430 (with a post peen glass bead decontamination) as this will significantly improve the fatigue life of the spring without compromising relaxation performance (which is a significant issue with other lessor material grades).
Titanium can offer significant weight savings when compared to other materials, however it is useful to remember that where the application is highly stressed an increased wire diameter will be required due to the lower material modulus.
The highest weight savings that can be achieved are normally from extension springs where due to the reduced material strength less active coils will be required to achieve the same performance. Compression spring savings vary from application to application.
We produce springs from Beta C Titanium (AMS4957) which is regarded as being the ‘best’ Ti spring grade. We also produce springs for lower stress applications from other Titanium grades such as Grade 5 (AMS4928).
